Tooth Extraction

Why would I need a tooth extraction?

Sometimes a tooth has to go, despite all efforts to save it. An extraction sounds so final; however, a tooth extraction could be necessary for a variety of reasons:

  • A wisdom tooth or teeth that have developed poorly
  • Serious decay
  • Advanced periodontal (gum) disease
  • Teeth that are broken, fractured, or otherwise beyond a healthy restoration
  • Misaligned teeth that are crowding or shifting other healthy teeth
  • Preparation for orthodontic treatment

Tooth removal via oral surgery can actually be a positive and healthy step. Better still, Dr. Naina is prepared to make sure your chewing ability and appearance aren’t affected.

What should I expect during a tooth extraction?

Your comfort is a priority, so the staff at Diamond Care Dental take necessary steps using local anesthesia to numb your tooth, surrounding jaw, and gums. Nitrous oxide (“happy gas”) is also available to relax you during the procedure.

The team is right beside you for every step of the procedure to make sure you stay comfortable.

How do I care for my oral health following a tooth extraction?

What you do after your tooth extraction and oral surgery procedure is extremely important in the comfort and speed of your healing.

The healing process requires your gum tissue to adjust to the missing tooth. Carefully placed gauze on the extraction site helps this process along.

It’s vital to effective healing that you avoid vigorous rinsing, brushing, or other common habits such as smoking, drinking alcohol, or directly chewing on the treated area. Other strategies to promote recovery and healing include:

      • Apply an ice pack to the area outside your extraction site to help reduce any swelling
      • Use the prescribed pain medication as needed
      • Take a prescription antibiotic to prevent infection
      • Drink plenty of fluids and eat soft (easy-to-chew) foods during the day following your procedure

The Diamond Care Dental staff provides you with detailed instructions for post-extraction care and are available if you have any questions.

You’ll feel much better in a few days. Plus you’ll have the confidence that you’ve taken care of your oral health and reduced your risk of future problems associated with an unhealthy tooth or teeth.

Contact Dr. Naina at Diamond Care Dental about your tooth discomfort. Schedule a consultation by phone or online to discuss oral surgery solutions to restore your health and tooth function.
